The NSCC was founded in 1958 by the Navy League of the United States at the request of the Department of the Navy.

The Sea Cadets 9-1-1 was formed at the Naval Station Great Lakes in 1962 - the first Naval Sea Cadet Corps unit. The first-year program included 10 officers and 48 Sea Cadets.

Today there are 380+ active units around the country.
